I\u2019m talking specifically about the <strong>Alienware 17 R2<\/strong> and <strong>17 R3<\/strong>, though this might apply to a few other models as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My Alienware 17 R3 started giving me trouble every time I tried to launch a game. In my case, it was usually VR games for my <strong>HTC Vive headset<\/strong>. Strangely enough, the laptop worked perfectly fine for everything else \u2014 even demanding software like <strong>SolidWorks<\/strong>, <strong>Photoshop<\/strong>, and <strong>Lightroom<\/strong> ran smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete Tear Down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This laptop had survived almost five years of heavy use \u2014 plus the added challenge of living in a home with pets. It was definitely time for some deep cleaning and a <strong>thermal paste replacement<\/strong> on both the CPU and GPU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found a great step-by-step teardown video on YouTube for the Alienware 17 R3 (highly recommended if you\u2019re doing this for the first time). Following along, I carefully <strong>disassembled the laptop<\/strong>, cleaned the fans using a small brush and compressed air, and applied new thermal compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While taking it apart, I noticed something suspicious \u2014 the <strong>charging port connector cable<\/strong> (shown around the <strong>19:13\u201319:40<\/strong> mark in the video) looked slightly <strong>burned<\/strong>. I didn\u2019t have a replacement part on hand, and I wasn\u2019t completely sure that it was the culprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reassembling everything, I ran a few tests\u2026 and, to my disappointment, the laptop still crashed the moment I launched a VR game. I always start troubleshooting with the simple, obvious causes \u2014 and that <strong>burned cable<\/strong> fit the description perfectly. So I decided to replace it. I found the exact cable online [link could go here].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voila!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days later, the part arrived. I went through the long and slightly tedious disassembly process once again, replaced the <strong>charging port connector cable<\/strong>, reassembled everything, and \u2014 <strong>voila!<\/strong> It worked like a charm.
